Doris Sarah Lavina Knechtel

Passed peacefully on Wednesday, February 12, 2020 in the presence of God with her daughter and best friend, Tamara Knechtel (New York) at her side, while resting comfortably at her home in Owen Sound.

Doris was in her 87th year. She was born in New Hamburg, Ontario on October 10, 1933, a daughter of the late Eva Ruthig and Allan Wilhelm. She is survived by her sister Norma Dales and her husband Frank Dales of Cargill and sister D. Jean Berner and the late Willard Berner of Owen Sound.

Doris will be greatly missed by 8 nieces and nephews and their families. She was loved and adored by all those extended family and friends that met her kind and beautiful spirit. Doris was adopted as “GMa” by her 2 Grandchildren in Atlanta, Georgia, Ahmaya and Tariq Inman who will always remember the years they shared together.

Known for always putting family first, Doris loved spending quality time on weekends, holidays and whenever the call was made.  She cherished family functions and could always be found around the table playing euchre or pinochle and was not afraid of a shot and a beer. An avid sports fan, by way of her daughter, she could be talked into a football bet with a nephew, for loser owes a winner dinner. However, the pastime she loved most was spending the end of every year traveling with her daughter to far away places, including her most favorite trip, on safari to Kruger National Park, South Africa.

Doris loved life and was very self sufficient up to her 87th year, still driving and living alone before she became ill this past November.  An integral part of Doris’ day to day was helping to care for and spend time with her middle sister Jean, who has been living with Alzheimer’s disease for several years. Alzheimer’s is a disease that Doris and her family believe with the right financial support and research can be cured. As an expression of sympathy, in honor of Doris’ memory, the family is asking donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada (www.alzheimer.ca).

A private family service honoring Doris Knechtel is taking place at Riverside Cemetery, Wilmot Township Saturday, February 22, 2020, officiated by Dr. Gregory L. Pollard, of Enon Church, Atlanta, Georgia.

Arrangements entrusted to Grey Bruce Cremation and Burial Services 519-371-8507.
