David Mather of Meaford passed away peacefully with family by his side at the Owen Sound Brightshores Hospital on Monday, October 23, 2023 with the assistance of the MAID program.

David was in his 69th year and will always be admired for the strength and courage that he showed while fighting his 28 year battle with Multiple Sclerosis.

Born in Toronto on April 7, 1955, David was the son of Donald and Lois Mather (nee Mills).  He was predeceased by his father in 2001.

David is survived by his mother Lois, brothers Danny (Lisa), Brian (Lydia) and sister Brenda Fox (Wayne).  His children Paul, Kevin, their sister Tracey (Deer) Grabowski and Dylan. He was an uncle to Bob, Michael, Melissa Bailey, Jacob, Christopher and Stephen Mather and 8 great nieces and nephews. He is also survived by Janet Oliver, a long time companion and source of support.

Moving to Meaford with his family in 1967, David attended Meaford Community School, Georgian Bay Secondary School and Georgian College. David was a licensed welder before working in the family owned construction company.

David loved motorcycles and the open road but truly loved Meaford. He promoted the Municipality and local Service clubs with countless pictures and articles on the website that he developed and registered as meaford.com. He was once an avid fisherman on Georgian Bay and a member of the East Grey Hunters and Anglers Association. David undertook numerous EGHAA dredging projects in the Bighead River and Meaford Harbour supplying gravel for many local projects including the area of the now David Johnson Park. He completed many fish spawning stream rehabilitation projects and worked hard to maintain the Bayfield St. boat ramp, raising funds for its maintenance as well as being the driving force for the Meaford Harbour fish cleaning station.  David was the recipient of the 1997 Rotary Citizen of the year and an Ontario Lifetime Achievement Award recipient for his volunteer work in the community and promoting the Municipality through his website.

Cremation has taken place and there will be a private family service of interment at the Duxbury Cemetery.  Arrangements entrusted to Grey Bruce Cremation and Burial Services.

Condolences for David William Mather
